The Four Protective Meditations (Caturrārakkhā Bhāvanā) are the traditional grouping of:
- Recollection of Buddha
- Non-attachment to Body
- Intimacy with Mortality
At the outset they offer protection from the Five Hindrances, thus preparing the soil of the Heart/Mind for cultivation. Over time they can be incorporated and developed as integral parts to the Purification of Conduct, Equipoise of Heart/Mind, and Wisdom Awakening.
As a follow up to the recent Heartwood retreat with Bhikkhu Bodhi on these practices, this series will be geared toward offering further exploration for those who attended the retreat or are familiar with these practices. It will nonetheless be suitable for those that want an introduction to these wonderful practices.
Abhaya will guide this series. He is recently ordained as a Dharmacharya in the Embracing Simplicity Order and has held these practices centrally in his spiritual life for years.
Abhaya (Dustin Davis) is ordained as a Dharmacharya in the Embracing Simplicity Order under Venerables Pannavati and Pannadipa. His primary practices of Satipaṭṭhāna (4 Establishings of Mindfulness) in the style offered by Bhikkhu Anālayo, Ānāpānasati (Breath Based Mindfulness), and the Brahma Vihāras (Heavenly Abidings) spring from an affinity for the approaches offered in Early Buddhism. He also has an appreciation for the later traditions, having undertaken retreats in the Vajrayāna and Zen traditions including formally receiving the 5 Mindfulness Trainings from Thích Nhất Hạnh in 2013.
